My unabashed cheese that I posted over in yellowworld:
Korea is a small country. Historically, its been picked on by a bunch of neighbors. My grandmother spoke Japanese, since she was old enough to live through the colonization, when the Korean language was prohibited. Ive even said in another thread that S. Korea has basically been a puppet for the U.S. ever since WWII.
And so, almost accordingly, for 48 years, S. Korea had never even won a single tournament game. Prior to the tournament, they were slapped around by France, 5-0, and the entire nation was begging for a single victory this time round.

Win or lose – the Reds win

Even though the Korean team was beaten in their semi-final by Germany on Tuesday, one could argue that the real winners of the evening were the millions of Korean fans who supported their side all over the country.
Tens of thousands of fans without tickets gathered outside the stadium several hours before the kick off to ensure that they received the next best thing to a ticket for the game of the century – a place in front of the large screen TV that had been set up next to the stadium. And as soon as the fans started arriving, the party began.
Music was blaring out of several huge loudspeakers scattered all over the World Cup Park next to the 65,000-seater stadium and people were dancing and clapping, stopping only to chant the familiar Ko-Ko-Korea and Taehan Minguk.

My dad would have loved seeing this.
The only other time I’d ever really watched soccer was probably about 10 years ago or so, when Korea was playing another European team (Germany, I think it was), and I’d never seen my dad get so excited about sports before. I’d never seen my dad get that excited about anything, really, and it was nice. And I remember during that game, the Korean fans literally went beserk when Korea scored one whole goal — but ended up losing.
Right now they’re up again Italy and have gone further than any other Korean team in history. Outside, I can hear some crazy damn fans outside in the street, knocking on garbage pails in anticipation for the kick off.
GO BIG RED!!!!!!!
