Not that I was expecting Two Towers-quality cinematic genius (it doesn’t come around often, just watch ROTK!), but even my very basic, withered, atrophied need for either intelligence or genuine emotion in bites cried out in protest. I was probably more moved by Will Ferrell’s spiraling delivery of “I’m in a glass cage of emotion!” than at any point during The Last Stand.
Maybe I was expecting too much. Clearly, the first two episodes of the X-men trilogy had at least some honest exploration of the characters. Wolverine and Rogue as two loners who find comfort in one another (in a brother/sister context of course. Watching the bond between them begin to develop and eventually expand to allow others others at best was typical/standard movie adapation of comic book fare. It’s just shit you find youself willing to tolerate.
But in hopefully the last vehicle of the franchise, the semblance of dramatic conflict has been leveraged repeatedly — a few, repeatedly (what’s with these scientiest or military fathers who spawn mutant freaks and then dedicate their lives tomutan eradication? Read the rest of this entry »

I finally got around to purchasing the extended DVD version, which was released on 11/18. I’d been chompin’ at the bit for some time, eager to see if this version matched up to the extended Fellowship.
I had mixed feelings when watching it. There are a number of scenes that were either removed completely or cut down considerably from the theatrical version, and while I felt that this practice was to the detriment of Fellowship, the editing job done this time, in retrospect, was tremendous. Had they extended certain scenes as originally intended (and essentially been more faithful to Tolkien), the essence of Two Towers would have changed dramatically: instead of the growing, relentless dread that permeates Middle Earth and overshadows the entire film, we would have had to endure more of the playful goofiness spilled over from the Fellowship.

…rocked. Maybe it’s the not-so-latent geek in me that loved all of the special effects, but you’ve got to give credit to Spielberg: this guy is the OG when it comes to pure box office/action adventure/excitement. Raiders of the Lost Ark! Bygones!
Anyway, needless to say, my roommate and I thoroughly enjoyed it — but it was an event not without a near tribulation-like incident.

Went to go see Eddie Griffin in Undercover Brother today with my roommate. That was some funny shit:) Although I doubt the franchise (there will most likely be a sequel) will be as good as Austin Powers, the movie had a lot of hilarious moments. Plenty of stereotyping, plenty of gratituous body shots, great for boys.
Other than that, it was a pretty mellow day. This morning I watched The Blair Witch Project at my girlfriends (she wasnt scared one bit, one word — daytime) and then came back and was basically knocked unconscious by the damn toothache.
Because of my superhuman ability to adapt to foreign substances, I think my body is rapidly gaining tolerance to the Excedrin. Time to switch back to Tynelol and then fake myself out by switching again to Bayer.
