Legislators Denounce Congressman Coble’s Remarks

If we were incarcerated for our safety, why were we inside the barbed wire fences, and why were the gun towers facing us?

- Rep. Mike Honda

This week, a senior Republican congressman stated that he agreed with the policy to intern Japanese Americans during World War II, one the darkest periods in our nation’s history. His remarks demonstrated an appalling disregard for civil liberties and inexcusable ignorance of history.

- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

There can be no justification whatsoever of the imprisonment of Americans of Japanese ancestry. It was wrong then and cannot be defended today.

- Rep. Anna Eschoo

There is no room in the United States, let alone the Congress, for remarks that promote discrimination and the use of stereotypes.

- Rep. Jan Schakowsky
