I Hate My MTV
I Hate My MTV. And you should too.
For those of you who remember, I Want My MTV was their big slogan in the early 80s…remember the graphic of the astronaut planting the MTV flag on the moon? I guess in a way, it represented so much of what was cool about wanna-be counter-culture because it was just about the music, baby…friggen 24 hours a day of videos, non-stop practically!
Times have indeed changed and what MTV has become today makes me sick. And no, its not just cuz Im old, damnit! Everytime Ive unfortunately happened onto the station, its either The Real World , Road Rules , footage from a neverending barrage of Spring Breaks with girls getting their white t-shirts drowned, or some other crap.
Where the hell is the music, you ask? Ill tell you! Its somewhere lost in this tidal wave of Backstreet Boys, Britney, NSync or anyone else theyre trying to evangelize to you — and believe me, they have an agenda.
What makes it even worse is that if they came off as being corporatist and unapologetic for making music and sex such a business, I would be totally cool with that. Hey, I love Maxim !
Instead, they try and maintain that thin veneer of youth empowerment and consciousness by airing snazzy videos discouraging racial profiling and producing documentaries to educate teens on issues like drugs or even the LA Riots. And if anyone has seen these two documentaries alone, youll know what Im talking about. Theyre trying to breed a generation of idiots because its good money.
